At our first Ferndale Linux User Group meeting on the 27th July 2007 I gave a brief presentation and demonstration of the virtualisation technologies available to Linux. The demo went relatively well although the grand finale of a live migration was not ready in time. I have attached the presentation below.
Virtualisation in Linux is still in flux. Although Xen is now included in most distributions by default, there are lots of version compatability and config issues. For example some virtual images run on Gentoo but not on Ubuntu and the config files differ from version to version. I find it easier to use Gentoo for the host kernel and quest OS as it is easier to patch and build from source.
The tools to support virtualisation in Linux are still in early development and I look forward to better tool support for virtual machine management and provisioning.
