Block annoying sys-con.com popups with GreaseMonkey
If you have ever visited the Java Developer Journal web site you have had to contend with their annoying popup ad that blocks the whole screen until you click "close window". Whilst I support the need for sites to make money from advertising the lengths that sys-con go to is just a darn right abuse of Internet users. In fact its the whole of the sys-con.com and its subdomain that employ this type of spamming. Initially I just stopped going to their site but it happens often enough that I click on a search result or link and end up on their site that I decided to try and do something about this abuse.
GreaseMonkey -- Customising your web experience
For over a year now getting to know the Mozilla GreaseMonkey plugin has been on my todo list. I was always looking for a good project to start with and the most recent abuse I suffered when I accidentally strolled into JDJ galvanised me into action. It was quiet quick to implement the work-around and I thought it might be a bit harder. The attached file should be uploaded to GreaseMonkey by donwloading the file, removing the .txt extension, then opening it in Firefox and selecting "Install User Script" from the tools menu. (It should be easier to install but our CMS system insists on putting a .txt at the end of the uploaded files. A battle for anther day.)
This is my first attempt at a script so I am sure it can do with improvements. I am not a heavy user of the JDJ site so only use it superficially. Let me know if it can be improved.
