Sometimes software can be like the fashion industry, with ISV (independent software vendors) chasing the next best solution to the same old problems. A few years ago Scalix was all the rage in the mail server space, and lots of vendors jumped on the bandwagon telling their customer how much they could save by switching from Microsoft Exchange to Scalix.

Scalix Still Supported

But now there is a new mail server on the block that promises to take over the world, namely Zimbra. As a result some vendors simply inform their customers that they no-longer support the software they sold them a few years ago and offer them the "opportunity" to migrate to the new application that they now support. Needless-to-say this does not go down well with customers but it must work to a degree because so many ISVs do it.

At Jumping Bean we continue to support solutions we sold to customers until the customer is ready to migrate of change, assuming of course that the new solution is somehow superior. In most cases its just a trend and over time. once the hype dies down, the new kid on the block turns out to be just another solution.
