Software Freedom Day - YouTube videos

I have uploaded some of the video footage from Software Freedom Day. I am no movie director so the footage will not win any oscars. I haven't learnt to edit yet so it is all raw footage.

If you didn't manage to make that day, or are not located in Johannesburg or Pretoria, I hope this enables you to get some feeling for the event.

Do 80% of IT projects really fail?

Recently I have been thinking about the generally accepted statistic that 80% of IT projects fail. I can't say this has been my experience. The more I though about it the more I came to the conclusion that this statistic is another example of the way the research houses like to sensationalise their research. A more dignified term is market. Startling "facts" like this of course justifies the high costs of their services. Why would you pay all that money if the report told you what you already know?

Microsoft FUD again

Well Steve Balmer's been at it again. Even since the Novell deal members of the open source community have speculated that it was only a matter of time before Microsoft pulled the last card from its deck. The patent card.

At the moment Microsoft is only bluffing hoping that everyone else just folds. Their assertion that there are unspecified patent infringement in open source technologies might frighten some but most are keen to see Microsoft's hand.

Have you been visited by the BSA?

The other day a gentleman was doing the rounds in our office park handing out pamphlets from the Business Software Alliance (BAS). Of course we warmly welcomed him in and took his literature. Our entire office is run on open source software and we were keen to show him how companies can avoid visits from the BSA.
