Postgrey "timeout while reading input attribute name"

Postgrey is a great little utility to help eliminate spam from your mails server, and our setup has been running just fine for over three, or more, years now. But the other day I noticed that some of our email accounts were not getting any external mail anymore. These accounts were some of the little used email accounts on the various domains we use.

If you run postfix for your mail there may come a time when you need to deal with queue congestion that leads to a marked degradation of service with mail not being received or delivered. Usually this is your first indication that something is wrong.

Why Postfix may suddenly stop delivering mail if you using amavisd on centos 4

Today we experienced some mail delivery problems on one of our client's servers running Centos 4 and postfix with amavisd for virus and spam scanning.

Trawl the log files

The mail logs where filling with errors such as:

(delivery temporarily suspended: lost connection with 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] while sending RCPT TO)

We have some staff that connect to the office over VPN. Some of them experienced problems when sending files with attachments. Plain email went through fine but ones with attachments timed out.
