JavaFX first impressions and getting it running on Linux

Well on the 4th December 2008 Sun officially released the much anticipated JavaFX its play in the new Rich Internet Client (RIA) wars. Despite promises that its final release would  run on Linux when its SDK, which was released earlier, did not the final release only runs on Windows and Mac. Needless to say I am not happy with this.

Flex - Handling collections from a web service call in object format

We recently started an internal project and this time decided to use Adobe's Flex RIA (Rich Internet Client) technology for the front-end. We last used Flex on a project about a year ago and it is great for flashy web front-ends.

Google Web Toolkit and Echo Framework

Recently I have begun to experiment with the Google Web Toolkit. The GWT is an amazing framework that allows one to programme in pure java with the resulting application being cross-compiled into Javascript so that the entire application runs on the client browser with trips to the server occurring only when some middleware interaction takes place. Essentially your application becomes one javascript file.

Flex and XML namespaces

While learning Abobe's Flex technology one of the issues I faced was how to handle multiple namespaces in the soap messages returned from the web services we were calling. The web services had been written using XFire and, due to the tight deadlines, the namespaces where left to the verbose XFire defaults.

We have been busy on a project for a client who wanted us to use flex . We knew nothing of flex so its been a bit of a learning curve.

It is becoming clear to me that application development is under-going another paradigm shift with a new standard or dominant architecture emerging.
