When telkom screws your Asterisk server

Sometimes you get a call for Asterisk support and you are told by your client that their Asterisk server suddenly stopped working which is weird because once Asterisk, or any Linux application, has been setup it just runs.

Getting incoming faxes on trixbox and asterisk to work with install-ZAPHFC

Upgrading trixbox and getting incoming faxes to work with our Duxburry ISDN cards has always been a chore. Everytime we had to fight with the "install-ZAPHFC" script to get everything working properly.

This time I decided to make the process reproducable by modifying the standard "install-ZAPHFC" script. The script now applies the necessary patches to asterisk and compiles bristuff, junghanns drivers and spandsp so that incoming faxes works with the cologne chipset.

Jumping Bean's modified install-ZAPHFC script for trixbox and asterisk

At Jumping Bean we use Asterisk via the Trixbox distribution as our PBX server. We recently upgraded to Trixbox 2.2.1 which uses Asterisk 1.2.18. Our BRI ISDN lines link into several cheap Duxbury ISDN cards.

When using these cards with Trixbox the "install-ZAPHFC" script needs to be run patch asterisk and compile the drivers. The current "install-ZAPHFC" script however does not have spandsp and rxfax support built in.

Given the scripts lack of support for spandsp and therefore faxing we adjusted the script to get it to compile the neccessary moduels.
